The first Red Lobster opened on January 18, 1968, when friends Bill Darden and Charley Woodsby turned on the lights at their new seafood restaurant in Lakeland, Florida. It’s no coincidence that Lakeland is the innermost city in Florida; the concept was developed to see if a seafood restaurant could succeed far from the coast. It was a hit with both diners and critics, and by 1970 there were three locations in the Sunshine State (all turning a profit) and two more under construction. Darden knew that if his chain were going to expand further, however, he would need to sell it.

Later that year, he sold the company to General Mills, who kept Darden on board as an executive while they overhauled the company, transforming it from a fast food-style restaurant to a sit-down casual-dining restaurant while opening nearly 400 locations by 1985. In 1982, General Mills launched another chain restaurant that you might have heard of, Olive Garden, and an ill-fated chain called China Coast joined the trifecta before the trio was spun off by General Mills to shareholders under a brand new company called Darden Restaurants. Red Lobster remained a subsidiary of Darden until May 2014, when it was sold to new owners Golden Gate Capital for $2.1 billion.

While Red Lobster has certainly faced its ups and downs, it remains one of the most popular casual chains in America, and is constantly working to reinvent itself and stay ahead of the curve. Healthier menu items, new promotions, and redesigns are a given, and its new owners seem committed to making sure that it remains a part of the American dining landscape for years to come. Red Lobster® Stuffed Lobster Tail

  • 2/3 cup crab meat
  • 2/3 cup cheese and Garlic croutons (crushed) or any flavored pre-made crouton that you can find at your local grocery store
  • 1/4 cup. prepared Alfredo sauce
  • 1 tsp. fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp. salt-free all-purpose seasoning

*You can prepare this sauce at home or can use prepared garlic butter from your local grocery store

  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/8 cup olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp. minced garlic
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/8 cup fresh parsley
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • 1/2 lemon, juice of

Stuffed Lobster Tails

  • 4 Maine lobster tails
  • Your crab stuffing mixture
  • Garlic butter sauce
  • 1/4 cup Monterey Jack cheese

Prepare Crab Stuffing

  • In a large bowl, combine crab meat, crushed croutons, Alfredo sauce, lemon juice and all-purpose seasoning.
  • Set aside for later.

Prepare garlic butter Sauce

  • In skillet, heat together butter and olive oil and sauté garlic.
  • Add lemon juice, salt, pepper and parsley. Continue cooking for a few minutes.
  • Set aside for later.
  • With a sharp knife or kitchen shears, cut completely through Maine lobster tail from base of flippers to the top. Do not cut through flippers.
  • Break open last shell segment closest to the tail and roll the two sides outward to open lobster.
  • Remove vein. If necessary, use a pan of ice water to remove veins from the meat.
  • Gently lift meat from shell leaving meat attached at tail end. This keeps meat from sticking to shell when cooked and makes it easier to eat.
  • Place meat back into shell.
  • Repeat with other lobster tails.
  • Place Maine tails in a square glass baking dish or on a baking sheet.
  • For each tail, split crab stuffing into four equal portions. and shape stuffing in an oval shape similar to the opening between the two halves of the tail.
  • For each tail, gently place stuffing on the opening from tail to end, having it sit up a little, and keeping the stuffing off the lobster meat. Do not press stuffing into the cavity.
  • For each tail, brush stuffing and lobster meat evenly with garlic butter.
  • For each tail, split cheese into four equal portions and place the Monterey Jack cheese on top of the stuffing only, ensuring that the lobster and stuffing are evenly covered.
  • Bake the lobster tails in the preheated oven until the meat is opaque and the stuffing is golden brown on top, 10 to 12 minutes. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the lobster tail should read 145 degrees F (65 degrees C).
  • Serve with melted butter and lemon

Formation and growth Edit

The first Red Lobster restaurant was opened on January 18, 1968, in Lakeland, Florida, by entrepreneurs Bill Darden and Charley Woodsby. [11] [12] The oft-quoted date of March 1968 is based on the March 27, 1968 incorporation of Red Lobster Inns of America, Inc. (now GMRI, Inc.) in the Florida Secretary of State's Office. [13]

Originally billed as a "Harbor for Seafood Lovers", the first restaurant was followed by four others throughout the southeastern United States. In 1970, General Mills acquired Red Lobster as a five-unit company. With new backing, the chain expanded rapidly in the 1980s.

Red Lobster entered Canada in the 1980s, in many cases by buying Ponderosa restaurant locations. Currently, Red Lobster generally maintains between 25 and 30 locations in Canada, the bulk in larger urban centres in Ontario (across southern Ontario plus one in Sudbury, in northern Ontario) with a smaller number in larger urban centres in all three Prairie provinces. It exited the Quebec market in September 1997, due to financial losses, and never attempted to enter British Columbia [14]

On March 29, 1994, Bill Darden died, after an extended illness, at the age of 75. [15]

In 1995, Red Lobster (along with Olive Garden and other sister chains), became part of Darden Restaurants, Inc. During that time, General Mills decided to release Darden into an independent, publicly traded corporation. [5]

2009 prototype and sale Edit

In 2009, Red Lobster debuted its new Bar Harbor restaurant prototype modeled after coastal New England architecture. [16] The new exterior features include shingle and stone towers, signal flags, and Adirondack-style benches. The interior updates include dark wood paneling, warm-toned fabrics, soft lighting, and nautical decor and artwork. [17]

On December 19, 2013, Darden Restaurants announced plans to sell or spin off the Red Lobster brand, citing pressure from stock investors. [18] This was in direct response to Darden's going over budget on a new digital platform. [19]

On May 12, 2014, Darden announced that as part of its spinoff of Red Lobster, it was converting the co-located Red Lobster and Olive Garden locations into standalone Olive Garden locations. [20] On May 16, 2014, Darden announced it would be selling the Red Lobster seafood restaurant chain to Golden Gate Capital for US$2.1 billion. [21] Darden announced the completion of the sale of Red Lobster on July 28, 2014. [22]

On August 6, 2014, Red Lobster announced their new headquarters location in CNL Center City Commons in Orlando. [9] On March 6, 2015, Red Lobster officially opened the Restaurant Support Center. [10]

Red Lobster has offered an endless snow crab leg promotion twice in its history (as of September 2003). However, in 2003, the promotion resulted in its parent company, Darden Restaurants', taking a $3 million charge to third-quarter earnings, resulting in president Edna Morris' departure from the company.

The ill-timed promotion was launched amid high wholesale crab leg prices. The chain also underestimated how many times a customer would order more. Further complicating matters at the restaurant level was the amount of time customers spent table-side in the restaurant cracking crab legs. This resulted in increased wait times in the lobby and overall diminished customer capacity per hour. [23]

In February 2016, American singer Beyoncé referenced Red Lobster in her single "Formation". After unexpectedly releasing the single and performing it during the Super Bowl 50 halftime show, Red Lobster reported a 33% sales increase due to the reference. [24]

Red Lobster introduced a new Daily Deals menu in 2020, featuring Endless Shrimp Mondays and more deals. [25]

The brand specializes in seafood, including crab, fish, lobster, mollusks, and shrimp. It also serves chicken, desserts, pasta, and steak. [26] [ promotional source? ]

Lobster bisque controversy Edit

In February 2016, Red Lobster was exposed for using less expensive langostino, along with Maine lobster, in their lobster bisque recipe. [27]

As of June 23, 2020, the company had 719 locations worldwide. These locations span 44 US states, China, Canada, Ecuador, Guam, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. [6] [7]

About 22,000 lucky pasta fans were treated to an eight-week unlimited pasta pass for just $100 in 2017. That year, the promotion, which Olive Garden has done since 2014, sold out in just one second.

In 2013, when the restaurant parted ways with their famous tag line "When you're here, you're family," they decided to hand the slogan over to, of all people, Jimmy Fallon .

It's unclear if it was a parody or not, but Fallon signed an official-looking contract to receive the slogan while on the air.

Olive Garden's tagline was then changed to "We're all family here."

I tried the Red Lobster lobster pizza! – Red Lobster review

Now I have honestly never had lobster before… so I didn’t really know what to expect. I’m one of those people that loves to come to Red Lobster for the shrimp and their biscuits for the most part. I am one of those safe eaters, but I am slowly branching out into trying new things whenever we go out for date night.

Upon looking over the appetizer menu at Red Lobster, we decided to go for the lobster pizza.

It cost us $12.99 for this appetizer.

The pizza has Maine lobster meat, langostino, Norway lobster, melted mozzarella, fresh tomatoes and sweet basil on it.

I will say that it does taste very cheesy and savoury. It is also very filling so I would recommend actually saving some to take home for later in a to-go box.

Do I recommend eating the Red Lobster lobster pizza?

Absolutely! It tastes amazing. It wasn’t a lot of lobster on it, but what I did taste of it did taste delicious considering it was my first time trying lobster in general. I would recommend this for sure!

I also recommend visiting the Madison Heights, Michigan Red Lobster location. This is the one we went to for our date night.

Recipe: Cold Creamy Cucumber Soup With Avocado

1 tsp extra-virgin olive oil

3 leeks, washed and sliced

4 cups (about 3 large) cucumber, peeled, seeded, and cubed

4 cups low-sodium chicken stock

1 Tbsp chopped fresh dill, divided

2 tsp sherry or red wine vinegar

8 ounces fat-free plain Greek yogurt

1 ripe avocado, peeled and cubed

  1. In a heavy-bottom 4-quart pot, heat butter and olive oil over medium heat. Saute leeks 5-7 minutes, until tender. Add garlic and continue sauteing 2 more minutes.
  2. Add cucumber and chicken stock. Simmer until cucumber is softened (about 6-8 minutes).
  3. Pour small batches of cucumber soup into a blender and puree until smooth.
  4. Return pureed soup to pot and add 1 tsp of dill, sherry or vinegar, salt, pepper, and yogurt. Whisk to blend thoroughly.
  5. Cover and refrigerate soup until chilled, about 2-3 hours.
  6. To serve, ladle soup into bowls and garnish with avocado and the remaining dill.
